I’m a big fan of the children’s e-boutique Melijoe.com. Launched back in 2007 by Parisian Nathalie Christen-Genty, it offers age-appropriate and practical clothes for babies and kids including brands such as Stella McCartney, Tartine et Chocolat, and Chloe. Plus they have just taken on board the prestigious brand Ovale which offers the most gorgeous baby gifts and christening presents including personalised works of art.
I caught up with Nathalie to find out more about the company, her style and plans for the future.
LSF: I love your gorgeous online childrenswear store Melijoe.com. Tell me a little about the site and how it came about?
Nathalie- I only became interested in children’s fashion after I had my first child in 2003. I’ve always followed grown-up fashion, but when I went shopping for my son, I was disappointed in the selection I found in multi-brand stores. So I decided to launch my own e-commerce site specialising in children’s fashion. Before I knew it, Melijoe became the ‘go-to’ for kid’s fashion online. Today we feature over 100 of the best names in kid’s fashion, presented in nine different languages. Our team is really creative, so we’re always bringing exclusives, previews, collaborations and other surprises to the site, plus our online magazine covers the latest fashion news and trends.
LSF: Have you always had an interest in style?
Nathalie– I always loved fashion, photography, black with white, Chanel, Saint Laurent: I would record fashion shows and watch them over and over again after school. I also loved collecting magazines.
LSF: You started your business soon after your first son was born, you’ve now got five children, how do you balance business and motherhood?
Nathalie- The secret is to keep the right pace, having a sense of timing! I’m a mother of five, ranging from 18 months to 13 years old and my children are my inspiration every day. During the week, I’m in 100% mummy-mode after work (I practically never go out) because their father works in London. But on Friday night, when Nicolas comes back, we go to 52 Faubourg or Le Richer to have a romantic diner just the two of us. Even after five children and so many years, it always feels like a reunion.
LSF: What are your favourite childrenswear brands?
Nathalie– 5 children = 5 personalities … and so many different styles! I like to blend mix up brands that I love myself such as Chloé, Marc Jacobs, Gucci with brands like Petit Bateau, Scotch & Soda, Kenzo, Little Eleven… But I make sure to test every brand!
LSF: What are your favourite childrenswear trends for SS16?
Nathalie– Arty & Geek (back to the 90’s) for the boys
– Beach Stripes & Flowers / Stripes for girls (which will soon be online at melijoe.com…)
LSF: How would you describe your style?
Nathalie- I’m a Parisian at heart, and as I mentioned I have a lot going on at home. I’d describe my style as natural with light make-up. Day-to-day, I like mixing a strong designer piece with a pair of trainers – that’s really my uniform. Trainers such as Nike, Balenciaga, Valentino which I would even pair with a Dolce dress!
LSF: What are your favourite fashion brands?
Nathalie– Chloé, Stella McCartney, Gucci, Miu Miu.
LSF: Which three beauty products couldn’t you live without?
Nathalie– Chanel Perfection Lumiere #20: I’m not really into make-up but I’ve used this foundation since I was 17. Night Repair from Estee Lauder: my 2nd skin! My Saint Laurent eye liner.
LSF: Do you have any advice to readers wishing to start up their own business?
Nathalie– Don’t give up! You need to have THE idea, to be sure of yourself, of your concept. After all of this, if you are still passionate about your idea, you can do it!
LSF: What’s next for Melijoe.com?
Nathalie– I have a thousand ideas in my head, like visions.
